HOW IT WORKS
Congratulations on your precious pregnancy and thank you for considering encapsulating your placenta with Amma Prema. Please read the main page of Placenta Encapsulation here on this website for more details regarding the benefits, possibilities, and more information about our services.
The Initial Step:
Once you've decided to hire Amma Prema to encapsulate your placenta there is a process to ensure things flow smoothly and familiarize you with things before we pick up your placenta. Please read everything below, and include your partner as well so that you will both be comfortable with how it works.
During Pregancy- PLEASE let your care provider know that you plan to encapsulate and be sure to include this in your birth plan so that your providers remember after your placenta is birthed what you intend to do with it.
The Next Step:
Please fill out the Placenta Encapsulation Intake Form. I will then email you a waiver form. Once these two forms have been submitted and you have paid in full, your space will be held for you in the calendar.
Lab Work
Remember to make sure to ask your caregiver for a copy of your blood work available for us to view. Your protection and ours is important. We will need: (HIV, Hep B, and STD panel). Scanning/Emailing blood work ahead of time is recommended. If you haven't sent bloodwork by the time of birth, then I will need to see a copy of your blood work before transporting your placenta, so be sure to have it with you when I come to pick up. If you are a patient at Baby + Co. birth center in Cary, NC where I also work as an RN- then I will need your permission (verbal or written is fine) to print your labs from your electronic medical record.
The Last Step:
Payment must be sent at the time you complete paperwork. A payment can be made via the paypal website and sent to: [email protected] OR by sending a check payable to: Amma Prema. Address: 18 East Smoketree Court Clayton Nc 27527
We ask for full payment to be made in order to reserve your space in the calendar. If for any reason the encapsulation cannot happen, your money will be refunded minus a processing fee of $33. After your placenta has been picked up, there are no refunds.
After Your Birth
*** Once your baby is born, have a family member either text or call Kara at (919) 621-0480 between 8am- 9pm.
We will make arrangements so that I can come pick up your placenta. PLEASE DO NOT take your placenta home! It may be several hours until I can pick it up, so keep it with you at all times. You can bring a medium sized cooler with you and keep your placenta cool with ice packs until I arrive, OR/ If you are delivering at a birth center, they can store your placenta in their refrigerator until I am able to get there. If you are delivering in the hospital, we will make a plan to meet outside. I will not be able to meet you on the postpartum floor, unless I'm also your doula and there during your birth. If you are having a homebirth, then I will come to your home.
Storage
PLEASE bring a medium sized cooler and two gallon size ziplock bags with your name, phone number, and due date to the hospital with you. The placenta will go straight into the labeled bag to avoid it being lost, contaminated or forgotten. If you are at the birth center, they often have ziplock bags, and a refrigerator to keep it cold until I can pick it up. Remember to remind your care provider right after the birth so that the placenta isn't mistakenly taken away. The bag, or container should go directly into the cooler with plenty of ice. It is not to be frozen unless you plan to encapsulate after 5 days.
*** The placenta under no circumstances should be contaminated with any sanitizing or preserving chemicals. If the placenta has been contaminated, it cannot be used.. It will therefore need to be discarded. Ensuring the placenta doesn't go to pathology is one way to prevent this issue. If it does need to go to pathology, ask your provider if sending a sample is possible rather than the whole placenta. If this isn't an option, then we cannot encapsulate. If you develop an infection such as chorioamnionitis, then your placenta will be brought to pathology and will not be encapsulated or handled by Amma Prema.
Important Points
*the placenta must not sit out longer than 4 hrs at room temperature
*If encapsulation with two days isn't possible, then it needs to be in a sealed container in a 50-60 degree refrigerator for no more than 4-5 days. It will need to be frozen after 5 days.
*It is best to encapsulate your fresh uncontaminated placenta within two days of your birth.
Delivery of Your Capsules
If you are birthing at Baby + Co Cary, then your placenta goodies will be brought to your home at your 48 hr home visit, OR/ if they are not ready yet, then they will be brought to the birth center and you'll be notified when someone can come pick them up.
We can make arrangements based on where you live as to how they will be delivered. If you are further then 30 min., then we may make a plan to meet somewhere in the middle for pick-up.
