WHY YOU CAN JUST DO-ULA IT!
Doulas provide physical, emotional, & informational support during pregnancy, labor, birth and postpartum.
A doula’s continuous, knowledgeable and reassuring presence makes an important difference in how confident and comfortable a woman feels during pregnancy, labor, birth, and beyond. This in turn creates the ideal atmosphere of calm, relaxation and active participation in the process of labor and birth.
Studies have found the following benefits associated with the presence of a doula:
Cesarean section down 50% -80%
Length of labor down 25%
Synthetic oxytocin use down 40%
Pain medications down 30%
Epidurals down 60%
Forcepts or vacuum down 30%
In addition, doulas support birth partners by allowing them to give their own unique, intimate attention to their partner. With the assistance of a doula, birth partners are often better able to support their partners to whatever level they are able and comfortable. Together, we are all part of the mother's "birth team" together supporting and help assuring her best possible birth experience.
HOW DOULAS SERVE YOU
There are innumerable ways a Doula may serve you. A doula might be the only trained labor professional who is supports you continuously during your birth. A doula may offer a hand to hold during labor. Sometimes it comes as a massage during your birth surges, or eye contact to help you focus and know your supported. Or someone to draw you a bath or shower in labor. It can be gently encouraging you or offering suggestions to change positions during the course of labor. It could be guidance about breathing or relaxation techniques or other coping skills that can greatly reduce discomfort. It often involves being an emotional and informational support for your spouse or partner if birth is an unknown experience for you. It could be encouraging you in the creation of a birth plan. Sometimes, if may look like guidance about position changes to help labor unfold and for baby to get into it's optimal position for birth.
After labor & birth, it is often encouraging and helping establish breastfeeding. Perhaps it is capturing the essence of your new baby, & family in photographs you can treasure throughout your lifetime. It may be having someone to come and help you with the baby; supporting breastfeeding, light housekeeping, preparing meals, sibling care, and caring for the baby so you can get some much needed sleep.
This work requires a great deal of energy, skill, and Love; therefore one of the most important aspects of a Doula is her ability to take great care of herself so that she can serve you from a full well!
**The scope of practice of Doulas does NOT include the following: practicing medicine, performing clinical skills, or making diagnosis. Doulas do not practice medicine.
MEETING A DOULA
Here are my top tips for meeting and interviewing Doulas.
1.) Do you feel comfortable with this person? It is very important that you be comfortable with whomever you choose to be with you during such a monumental time as birth.
2.) Is a consultation offered? Check with any Doulas you interview, but most do not charge for their consults. This can take place by phone, Facetime, or in person at Amma Prema allowing us to get to know one another better.
3.) Is the Doula willing to answer questions you have? Notice how you feel when you meet. It is helpful to write down any questions you have and bring it with you to your consult so you remember to go over what's important to you in helping you make your decision.
4.) Do you feel the Doula's sincerity? Do you think a Doula is simply telling you what you'd like to hear, or are they telling it like it is, sharing their real ,practical in the field experience and wisdom?
5.) How can you Navigate the cost? While it's true many insurances do not cover the cost of a Doula, many HSA's and FSA's will, Often, Doula's can provide whatever paperwork you require so that you get reimbursed. If you have one of these plans, make the most of it and set aside funds for your Doula's fees ahead! Most Doulas charge according to their experience, and that is not to say a Doula with less experience is less amazing! Some Doulas also are willing to barter or trade for a portion or all of their services. Some are willing to work with moms experiencing hardship for reduced rates. Often Doulas who are just starting out, may charge less so they can gain experience.
