placenta encapsulation
Methods
There are two methods for placenta encapsulation. One is called TCM (The Chinese Method), and the second is the Raw Method. The TCM holds that the postpartum women is open, and cool in energy following her birth. Therefore, warming, nourishing foods and herbs help her come back into balance, bringing about a healing postpartum. The Raw Method follows the idea that once foods are heated above a certain temperature (118 degrees f) important enzymes are lost. The dehydration process and resulting capsules are the same for both methods. The only difference is that in the TCM, the placenta is first gently steamed with specific herbs, roots and fruits prior to dehydration and encapsulation. A third method (which also can be provided) is to lightly steam the placenta before dehydrating, but without using the traditional herbs, etc.
Placentophagy (consuming ones placenta) has been practiced for thousands of years by women of many cultures for a more healing, nourishing, energizing and restorative postpartum. Amma Prema offers both of these methods, resulting in capsules taken starting within the first several days after birth. Provided they are stored properly, they will last throughout postpartum. Each individual placenta is unique. Therefore, the average amount of capsules it makes varies, although the average is somewhere between 70-150. Tinctures can also greatly extend the life of the placenta medicine in a liquid form (very highly recommended)- for use during the premenstrual time to balance hormones, and can even saved for menopause provided its properly stored. They can also be given to babies and children in the appropriate dosage as an immune boosting remedy, during times of stress or transitions (first day of school, girls first period) etc. The placenta contains stem cells unique to each child, vitamins, and minerals, and is a very powerful remedy.

Hiring Amma Prema to encapsulate your placenta:
I encapsulate with a ceremonial approach, meaning I honor your placenta as sacred and holy, and feel reverence for what you have created, and how it has served you and your baby, and how it can and will continue to serve you. If this doesn't appeal to you, then I may not be the right encapsulator for you. By filling out both the prenatal intake form,, and making your payment in full will reserve your space in the calendar. You will need to provide me with a copy of your prenatal labwork (can be scanned to email or a physical copy). After you have given birth, you will text or call me and I'll come to pick up your placenta. Your placenta will need to be refrigerated or kept in a cooler on ice, or in the lab refrigerator of your place of birth until I can come to pick it up. Under most birth circumstances, your placenta can be encapsulated and consumed. Exceptions would be if you developed an infection, or your placenta had to be sent to Pathology for any reason. Your capsules are typically ready within the first few days postpartum. Once they are ready, I'll arrange with you to deliver your capsules and give you instructions on how to store them, dosage, and answer any questions you may have.
The following are also available:
*placenta tincture- (a liquid tincture containing a piece of your placenta and high grade 80 proof (40%) alcohol to preserve it. This process takes 4-6 weeks.
*placenta salve - (clarified butter (ghee) and herbal placenta preparation- used as an ointment for cracked skin, healing cesarean scars, diaper rash, burns, etc.
*Flower essence and essential oil recommendations for postpartum support
Safety:
Amma Prema is committed to workplace safety for the purpose of placenta encapsulation. Kara is a Registered Nurse and is certified by OSHA in Bloodborne Pathogens and Infection Control for Placenta Encapsulators. The space for placenta encapsulation has a dedicated surface, and is cleaned per OSHA standards which protects against blood born pathogens. All of the surfaces are cleaned with hot soapy water, then an OSHA approved disinfectant solution, followed by another hot soapy water scrub. The cleaning happens the same way for each and every encapsulation. We care about everyone's safety- (yours and ours), so we will not encapsulate for anyone with the following: HIV, Gonorrhea, Syphilis, Chlamydia, or Hepatitis B or C. If this is your circumstance, a referral will be made to another specialist who can encapsulate for you in your home.
Equipment:
Stainless steel and some non disposable and disposable equipment is used. All non disposable and stainless steel equipment is scrubbed, soaked/disinfected, and rinsed again with the above solutions. While waiting to be dehydrated your placenta will always remain at 41 degrees or below which eliminates the possibility of bacterial growth. The placenta is then heated between 130-160 degrees for over 8-12 + hours depending on your unique placenta, or a longer period on lower temperatures if you choose the RAW Method.
